Supportive Housing is a means through which individuals with psychiatric disabilities can live in the community, through assistance with socialization, financial aid and employment training. This type of housing can be either monitored small group residential facilities with on-site staff, or independent living homes or apartments with access to community care providers and programs.
The purpose of supportive housing is to help this at-risk population function as full participating members of their community.

Typically, supported housing should be available in every community and in every state across the nation. SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and mental Health Services Administration), along with the US Department of Health and Human Services and HUD, published a set of guidelines in 2010 for permanent supportive housing for the mentally ill. The program depends upon non-profit organizations to develop these residential facilities within the communities. With over 11 million adults diagnosed with severe mental illness, approximately half of this population are living without proper access to care, stable housing, or efficent treatment programs.

Hundreds of supported housing residential facilities currently exist. However, there is little to no evaluation and assessment of these facilities. Neither is there a way to determine which facilties best suit the needs of each individual. The Center for Research and Evaluation of Supported Housing (CRESH) has initiated the research of these residential facilities to develop a comprehensive database for both health professionals and the patients or their families. In addition, each facility will be evaluated according to a fidelity scale and General Organizational Index (GOI) and given the opportunity to meet quality assurance standards and measures designed by this study.
Mind Span Wellness Communities, a 501c3 non-profit organization, is developing a model Supported Housing Community with the intent to replicated this model across the country.
